স্যোসাল সাইন্সে স্কলারশিপ আছে নাকি নেই এ ডিবেট অনেক দিন ধরেই চলছে। কেউ বলেন সব ফান্ড বা স্কলারশিপ STEM ডিগ্রি ধারীদের জন্য আর নন-স্টেমে তেমন কিছু নেই। কিন্তু সত্যিটা হলো নন-স্টেমে ও স্কলারশিপ আছে যদিও পরিমাণটা স্টেমের তুলনায় কম কিন্তু ভালোভাবে প্রোফাইল ডেভেলপ করে ট্রাই করলে ফান্ড ম্যানেজ করা সম্ভব। আজকে আলাপ করবো স্যোসাল সাইন্সে ফুল-ফান্ড পেতে কোন কোন বিষয় গুলো গুরুত্ব দিয়ে দেখা উচিত। আমি যেহেতু স্যোসাল সাইন্সে (ডেভেলপমেন্ট স্টাডিজ) পড়েছি আর এখন পলিটিক্যাল সাইন্সে মাস্টার্স করছি, তাই আমার অভিজ্ঞতার আলোকে আমেরিকায় স্যোসাল সাইন্সে ফান্ডিং এর কিছু বিষয় তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করবো।
সব ভার্সিটিতে একদম লাগবে এমন রিকুয়ারমেন্ট গুলো হলো- ৪ বছরের ব্যাচেলর ডিগ্রী, IELTS স্কোর, GRE স্কোর (কিছু জায়গায় লাগেনা), স্ট্যাটমেন্ট অফ পারপাস, রিকমেন্ডেশন লেটার, সিভি বা রিজিউমি, রাইটিং স্যাম্পল (কিছু জায়গায় চায়)। মোটা দাগে আমেরিকার ভার্সিটি গুলো এগুলায় চায়। এগুলা লাগবেই এপ্লাই করতে কিন্তু সবাই যখন এসব দেখিয়ে এপ্লাই করবে, তখন ফান্ড দিবে কাকে? সে বিষয় গুলো নিয়েই আলাপ।
১. সিজিপিএঃ অন্য সব ফিল্ডের মত এখানেও সিজিপিএ, IELTS এবং GRE স্কোর প্রধান অনুঘটক হিসেবে কাজ করে। তবে আমার ব্যক্তিগতভাবে মনে হয়েছে স্টেম প্রোগ্রামে লো-সিজিপিএ (৩ এর কম) হলেও যেভাবে ফান্ডিং হয়, স্যোসাল সাইন্সে সেটা একটু টাফ। অনেক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ডিপার্টমেন্ট গুলায় মিনিমাম একটা সিজিপিএ বার থাকে। তাই, ৩+ সিজিপিএ রাখা জরুরি কাজ গুলোর একটি। IELTS ৬.৫ আর GRE ৩০০+ স্কোর অনেক ক্ষেত্রে এনাফ তবে যত বেশি হবে ফুল ফান্ডের চান্স বাড়বে। আবার কিছু ডিপার্টমেন্ট হয়তো GRE না ও চাইতে পারে ( ভালো খবর হলো এ সংখ্যাটা বাড়ছে দিন দিন)। যদি সিজিপিএ খারাপ হয়, তাহলে অন্য স্কোর গুলা দিয়ে কাভার দেয়া যায়।
২. অভিজ্ঞতা- রিসার্চ, জব, এক্সট্রাকারিকুলারঃ শুরুতেই বলে নেই এগুলার কোনটাই রিকুয়ারমেন্ট না। তার মানে, কোথাও খুব একটা উল্লেখ থাকবে না যে এত বছরের রিসার্চ বা কাজের অভিজ্ঞতা লাগবে। কিন্তু রেলেভেন্ট কিছু থাকলে প্লাস পয়েন্ট হিসেবে কাজ করে। এমনকি এক্সট্রা কারিকুলার থাকলেও সেটা দেখানো যায় অভিজ্ঞতা হিসেবে যেখানে আপনার সামাজিক এ্যংগেজমেন্ট, লিডারশীপ কোয়ালিটি, স্যোসাল কন্ট্রিবিউশান এর মত ব্যপার গুলোকে খুব পজিটিভলি দেখা হয়। তাই, এগুলার কিছু কিছু নিজের প্রোফাইলে এড করা উচিত। একটা ইন্টার্নশিপ বা ভলান্টিয়ার কাজে যুক্ত হয়ে সিভিতে কিছু এড করে রাখলে ভালো।
৩. রাইটিং ও অ্যানালিটিকাল স্কিলঃ স্যোসাল সাইন্সে প্রচুর লিখালিখি করতে হয় যেহেতু ল্যাবে এক্সপেরিমেন্ট নেই। তাই কাজ হলো পড়া আর লিখা। যদি কোন জার্নাল পাব্লিকেশন থাকে, তাহলে বেশ ভালো, না থাকলে ফিল্ড রিলেটেড কোন লিখা যদি ন্যাশনাল ডেইলিতে ও থাকে, তাও কাজে দেয়। তবে মনে রাখতে হবে এটা আবশ্যক নয় বা ভাবার কোন কারণ নেই যে এটি না থাকলে ফান্ড হবেনা। রাইটিং স্যাম্পল ও ভালো একটি ওয়ে হতে পারে নিজের এ ক্যাপাসিটি প্রুফ করার। আরেকটি উপায় হলো GRE এ্যানালিটিক্যাল রাইটিং অ্যাবিলিটি তে ভালো করা। অনেক স্যোসাল সাইন্স পিএচডি প্রোগ্রামে একটা মিনিমাম রিকুয়ারমেন্ট থাকে। তাই, ভাল লিখতে পারাটা প্রুফ করতে পারলে সুযোগ বাড়ে।
পরিশেষে, আমি ফান্ড সিকিউর করেছি কিভাবে এ প্রশ্ন অনেকে জিজ্ঞেস করেন। আমার মনে হয় ব্যালেন্সড প্রোফাইল হেল্প করেছে এ ক্ষেত্রে। সেটা মানে বুঝাচ্ছি, যা যা লাগতো,তার সব কিছুই অল্প অল্প করে ছিল প্রোফাইলে। যেমনঃ ৩ বছর চাকুরির অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল, এক্সট্রাকারিকুলার ছিল প্রচুর, রিসার্চ এ কাজ করার অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল, জার্নাল আর্টিকেল ছিলনা তবে দেশের ইংরেজি পত্রিকায় লিখার অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল ইত্যাদি। কোথাও আহামরি কিছু করিনি কিন্তু সব কিছুতেই কিছু না কিছু করেছিলাম। এটা আমার ব্যক্তিগত ইভ্যালুয়েশন এখন ভার্সিটি কেন সিলেক্ট করেছে সেটা জানিনা। তাহলে, প্রস্তুতি শুরু হউক।
