ওহাইও ইউনিভার্সিটিতে এসে ১ টা সেমেস্টার শেষ করে যখন ২য় সেমেস্টার শুরু করলাম গত স্প্রিং এ, ঠিক তখনই করোনা প্রকট আকার ধারণ করা শুরু করলো। স্প্রিং ব্রেক দিয়ে আর কাওকে ক্যাম্পাসে ফেরত আসতে দেয়নি ভার্সিটি অথরিটি। এখানকার বেশিরভাগ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় একই কাজ করেছে। কারণ যেহেতু স্টুডেন্টরা সারা আমেরিকা সহ বিশ্বের অনেক দেশ থেকে এখানে আসে, তাই ব্যাক করার পর করোনা ছড়িয়ে যাওয়া ভীষণ রিস্ক ছিল। আমরা সাদরে সাধুবাদ জানিয়েছিলাম এ সিদ্দ্বান্তকে যেহেতু সেফটি ফার্স্ট। যে সেমেস্টারে ইন-পারসন ক্লাসের জন্য সব কিছু ঠিক করা ছিল, সে সেমেস্টার অনলাইনে হয়ে যাওয়ার পর বাকী কাজ কিভাবে সম্পন্ন হবে সে চিন্তা আমাদের চেয়ে বেশি ছিল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও ফ্যাকাল্টিদের। কারণ, কখনো মনে হয়না বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সব ফ্যাকাল্টিদের একসাথে অন্যলাইনে ক্লাশ নিতে হয়েছে। কিভাবে কি করবে সে সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে গিয়ে স্প্রিং ব্রেক ১ সপ্তাহের বদলে ২ সপ্তাহে গড়ালো। এর মধ্যে ফ্যাকাল্টি ও ইউনিভার্সিটি প্রেসিডেন্টের বিভিন্ন তথ্য ও স্ট্র্যাটেজি সহ ইমেইল আসতো প্রতিদিন। আম্যাদের রেগুলার কাজ ছিল করোনায় আজকে কতজন আক্রান্ত হল সে পরিসংখ্যান জানা ও এ সেমেস্টারে কি হবে সে চিন্তা করা।
যাই হোক, অনেক আলোচনা, ফ্যাকাল্টি ও স্টুডেন্টদের মতামত নেয়ার পর সিদ্ধান্ত হলো যে এ সেমেস্টারে লাইভ ক্লাশ হবেনা, মানে সরাসরি ফ্যাকাল্টিরা লেকচার দিবে না কারণ লাইভ ক্লাশ করার জন্য অনেকের ইন্টারনেট এত স্ট্রং না হতে পারে বা কারো ইন্টারনেট এক্সেস না ও থাকতে পারে। চলতি কোর্স গুলার বাকী অর্ধেক সেমেস্টারের জন্য নতুন সিলেবাস পাঠালো। সিলেবাস অনেক কাট-ছাট হলো, এসাইনমেন্ট কমিয়ে দিল। সব ফ্যাকাল্টি নিজেরা লেকচার ভিডিও করে আপলোড করতো একটা প্ল্যাটফর্মে আর আমরা যে কোন সময়ে দেখে নিতাম। তারপর সেটার উপর কোন লিখিত ফিডব্যাক দিতে হতো। এখানে যেহেতু মুখস্ত করে পরীক্ষার হলে বসে দেয়ার মত কোন পরীক্ষাই নেই, সেহেতু বাকি এসাইনমেন্ট সাবমিট করতে কোন ঝামেলা হয়নি। (পরীক্ষা পদ্ধতি নিয়ে পড়তে পারেন এখানে)। সব ফ্যাকাল্টি একটা কথাই বলতো, এখন খুব কঠিন সময় সবার জন্য আর আমরা জানি পড়াশুনা কারো প্রায়োরিটি লিস্টে নেই, তাই সব কিছু শিথিল থাকবে কিন্তু সেমেস্টার শেষ করতে হবে। সব এসাইনমেন্ট ইভালুয়েশনের সময় ও ওনারা ফ্লেক্সিবল ছিলেন অনেক।
পরের সেমেস্টার যথারীতি অনলাইনে গেল। কিন্তু এবার সবাই প্রিপেয়ারড। এর আগে অনেক ফ্যাকালটির জন্য অনলাইনে ক্লাশ নেয়া ছিল নতুন অভিজ্ঞতা কিন্তু এবার আর ঝামেলা হয়নি। এর মধ্যে বিশ্ব্ববিদ্যালয় অথরিটি সব পলিসি ঠিক করে ফেললো। বেশির ভাগ ক্লাশ লাইভ হল আর কিছু আগের মতই ভিডিও ও মাটেরিয়ালস আপলোড করে কোর্স নিল। যাদের ল্যাব আছে, তাদের একটা অংশকে ক্যাম্পাসে ডাকল আর সবার কোভিড টেস্ট বাধ্যতামূলক করে দিল। এভাবে আমার ৩য় সেমেস্টার শেষ করে এখন ৪ নাম্বারটা চলছে। গত ১ বছর পড়াশুনা হয়েছে অনলাইনে, পরীক্ষা অনলাইনে, কাজ করছি অনলাইনে। এমনকি কনভোকেশন ও বন্ধ নেই, ইতোমধ্যে প্রতি সেমেস্টারে স্টুডেন্টরা অনলাইনে কনভোকেশোনে এটেন্ড করছে। কারো কোন সেমেস্টার লস হয়নি, কারো গ্র্যাজুয়েশন বন্ধ থাকেনি বা কেউ কোনভাবে একাডেমিক্যালী ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়নি।
দেশে দেখলাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছেলেরা হলেঢ় তালা ভাংছে, খুলে দেয়ার জন্য আন্দোলন করছে। ফ্রেন্ড লিস্টের জুনিয়ররা হতাশা জানাচ্ছে যে পিছিয়ে যাচ্ছে। অনেকের উচ্চ-শিক্ষার প্ল্যান ছিল কিন্তু আগাতে পারছে না। আচ্ছা, আমাদের পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় গুলো কি এমন কোন সিস্টেম এডপট করতে পারতো না যেখানে সবাই অনলাইনে ক্লাস করা সহ পরীক্ষা দিতে পারবে? প্রাইভেট গুলা তো করতে পারছে! যদি আনসার হয় ইনফ্রাসটাকচারের অভাব আছে, তাহলে আমার প্রশ্ন হলো আছে কেন এমন অভাব? বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে বড় বড় বিল্ডিং হচ্ছে নিত্যনতুন কিন্তু এ সময়ে নিজেদের আধুনিক করার উপায় নেই কেন? সবাই যুগের সাথে যখন তাল মিলিয়ে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে, তখন আমরাই কেন খালি পিছিয়ে পড়তে হবে? জানি, উত্তর দেয়ার কেউ নেই, কিন্তু যেসব স্টুডেন্টদের ক্ষতি হচ্ছে, তাদের কি হবে? দেশের সব প্রতিষ্ঠান খোলা তাহলে ভার্সিটী বন্ধ কেন?
